Destination no. 2
Basilica Minore del Santo Niño
Is a 16th century church, it has always been the Sanctuary of the Sto. Niño, under the custody of the Augustinians. The number of priests assigned to the church varied from three to five aside from one or two lay brothers.

The convent of the Sto. Niño de Cebu was founded by Fr. Andres de Urdaneta on April 28, 1565 , the very day the Legazpi-Urdaneta expedition arrived in the island. On May 8 of the same year, when Legaspi and his men planned the urbanization of the city, they allotted a "place for the church and the convent of San Agustin, "where the Santo Niño image had been found."
In 1599, the convent was made a house of studies of grammar, headed by the Visayan linguist, Fr. Alonso de Mentrida. It also served as a rest house for missionaries working in the province and as a retirement home for the aged and the sick, usually attended to by a lay brother.

The Chapter held on August 6, 1578 recommended to all the fathers "that prayers to the Sto. Niño be offered every month as was the custom before." In 1641, the father provincial ordered that the feast of the Sto Niño be celebrated on January 14 “with all the possible solemnity, mass and sermon, since He deserves all the affection from us, being the Dulcisimo and most affectionate patron of our province."
Fr. Nicolas de la Cuadra (1731) was very instrumental in spreading the devotion of the Sto. Niño. He led an exemplary life, had writings and solemn rites which he established in the sanctuary, and acquired many jewels for the decoration of the statue.

The first novena to the Santo Niño was introduced by Fr. Mateo Diez, rector of the sanctuary in 1889, under the Cebuano title Novena ug pagdayeg sa Sto. Niño Jesus nga guisimba sa cyudad sa Sugbu , printed in Mandaluyong, Asilo de Huerfanos , 1888. This novena has been reprinted countless times.
Up to this time, the number of Sto. Niño devotees who follow the novena and attend mass every Friday keeps on increasing.
Construction of the Church
  • 1566 - the first church believed to be built on the site where the image of the Holy Child was found was destroyed by fire. It was said to be built by Fr. Diego de Herrera using wood and nipa.
  • 1605 - Fr. Pedro Torres started the construction of a new church, again made of wood and nipa. It was finished in 1626 but was again burned in 1628.

  • 1628 - Fr. Juan Medina started the construction of another church, using stone and bricks, a great innovation at that time. The construction was stopped because the structure was found to be defective - the bricks used seemingly "melted" upon contact with air.

  • February 29, 1735 - Father Provincial Bergaño, Governor-General Fernando Valdes, Bishop Manuel Antonio Decio y Ocampo of Cebu and Juan de Albarran Prior of the Santo Niño, started the foundations of the present church, using stone. A lot of help came. Fr. Antonio Lopez, prior of San Nicolas, assisted also together with the people of his district. The residents of Talisay also did four weeks of work and Fr. Francisco Aballe also tried to help with his parishioners from Mactan.

The materials used:
The stones were quarried from Capiz and Panay by an army of bancas. The molave wood came from the mountains of Talisay and Pitalo and was transported in bancas hired in Argao and Carcar. Fr. Albarran confessed that there was much difficulty in quarrying the stones. Despite the seemingly impossible task, Fr. Albarran was not discouraged. He used white stones to make the lime, with one banca transporting some 400 pieces of stones. There was also another obstacle: the lack of chief craftsmen and officers which forced Fr. Albarran to acquire some knowledge of architecture.
The church was finished not later than 1739. According to an author named Vela, "the church has all the characteristics of a solid construction to withstand all the earthquakes..." And true enough, the church withstood all earthquakes.
The original features of the church have been retained except for the windows added by Fr. Diez in 1889. In 1965, both church and convent underwent a bigger restoration on the occasion of the fourth centennial of the Christianization of the country. The face lifting was made with utmost respect for the historical character of the old structure.
Cardinal Hildebrando Antoniutti, Papal Legate to the Philippines , conferred upon the church the title of Basilica minore , a special privilege granted to the Augustinian Order by the Pope Paul VI. On the other hand, the former President Ferdinand Marcos declared the Sto. Niño Basilica a national shrine because of its historical significance.
Style of the Church

Facade - a blending of Muslim, Romanesque and neo-classical features - all set in what has otherwise been described as a high degree of integration. The façade is preserved in its original stone texture and natural color, conveying an air of simplicity of line and elegance.

Center section - the focus of attention. The arched main entrance is balanced by the side rectangular corners. A double-edged triangular pediment crowns the facade.

fountain on the side of the church.
I read that fountain symbolizes as waters of eternal life
Garden with Koi (Brocaded Carp) in mini pond kept for decorative purposes in outdoor facility of the church.

I took this photos near at the entrance of the church. I forgot what they called about it, but I think this structure shows some part of the history of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

Joven's Grill and Seafoods is an eat-all-you can- restaurant for only P189.00/ person this include unlimited drinks from juices to softdrinks.
A reasonable price for a lunch buffet and a band playing while you enjoy your meal.

Buffet Area
On the food warmer main course is placed and on the other side some fried, grilled and salads.
This area is where their sweets, fruits, juices and soft drinks placed

Pinoy Styled Dinning Area

Brownies and Puto
 Cakes and Pastries
Kilawin is a Philippine exotic delicacy in which the main ingredient is raw fish or meat marinated in vinegar, pepper, chili (preferably siling labuyo), chopped onions, and garlic and either cooked or served fresh without cooking. Other souring agents like calamansi juice may be used in place of vinegar.
The root word "kilaw" probably comes from the word hilaw, meaning "raw."

FRIED FOODS

This fried chicken is really good so “malami-an” (tasty) inside and out. They say that it was probably marinated in a lemon-lime soda that makes it flavorful.

Lumpiang shanghai, fried siomai, and a different fried chicken, an ordinary flavored one.

I'm happy that they serve Crispy Kangkong (River Spinach) with dresssing, this is one of my favorite pinoy food.
Kangkong a simple food but contains beta carotene, vitamin A, iron, phosphorus and thiamine.

is a salad consisting primarily of shredded raw cabbage. It may also include shredded carrots and other ingredients such as fruits and vegetables, apples, onions, green onions, peppers and various spices.
The term "coleslaw" arose in the 18th century as an Anglicisation of the Dutch term "koolsla", a shortening of "koolsalade", which means "cabbage salad".

The food in Joven's Grill and Seafoods is good but we are a little disappointed and saddened that they don't served more of the seafood and grilled foods which is their main dishes.
That's why my friend's tag line was I, "SEE FOODS!"

Before we get here, I thought arranging hotel reservation is really hard.  You will contact them thru their mails and never know if they would reply immediately. But here, they answer back day after to my mails and few queries was answered, our reservation was settled. They will give you their BDO account to deposit the initial payment and after that they will confirm your reservation.

Grand Tierra Suites I think was one of the best location I found to stay  since it is located in heart of Cebu. The staff is very welcoming and they always give us suggestions on what cab to ride and some destinations to visit while we are here.

Manong Guard ensures that  guests are safe in their suites.

Lounge Area and at the back is their Parking Area
Front Desk
Here you can see some brochures of services they offered like Body Massage, Package Tours and Fliers of some food chains in Cebu.

after you check in, you will automatically receive their complimentary snack from Cardinal Bakeshop - Cheese Roll and I'm not sure what they called it but it's like custard bread because it has mild-sweet taste on the outside and sweet filling in the inside.

I can say that these bread were really good and my co-staff ordered boxes of this.

We were assigned at Room 210 which is a family room good for 3 persons, maximum of 4 persons and our room was located on the farthest room on the left side of the hallway.
In the hallway you can also see water dispensers on both wings accessible for everyone's use.

and the room welcome us with these...
1 double bed topped by bath towels shaped in swans and 1 single bed.
Beds are covered with white, neat and clean bed sheets

well lit room with beautiful paintings on the wall

our room was furnished with amenities and fully equipped with hot and cold shower, air conditioning, telephone, WIFI connection and LCD TV

Grand Tierra also have dining services which offers variety of food. Our favorite here is their brewed coffee especially Café Latté.

I really recommend this Suite to all who’s looking for a place to stay in Cebu. A very reasonable rate for a convenient location, a good service, complete standard amenities, friendly staff, a comfortable and pleasant stay, think and consider this place!

After having a toxic duty, I wanna treat myself and have something to eat! At first, me and my co-staff had hard times in deciding where to eat, the usual saying "Saan tayo kakain?, Ikaw saan mo gusto? Kahit saan okay lang! Saan nga?" While walking along the south wing of SM Mall of Asia my co-staff said she wants pizza, the next question was "saan resto?" then we saw Joey's Pepperoni!

Joey Pepperoni Pizzeria is a casual dining restaurant that specializes in its distinctive take on contemporary Italian-American cuisine. Joey Pepperoni offers a premium dining experience at non-premium cost.

This is my first time to eat at this resto that's why I had difficulty in choosing what food to order. I thought my co-staff already tried this but surprisingly this   is also her first.

What we have here are variety of
Pasta, Pizza and Piati Allia Griglia (Rice Meal)

Chicken Parmigiana Php 230.00

Blended with tasty pomodoro sauce, topped with deep fried chicken thigh and melted mozzarella cheese

The Works
Php 175.00 (R8), Php 350.00

Fully loaded with smoked ham, pepperoni, bacon bits, salami, mushroom, beef topping, onions, bell pepper, and black olives

Maiale con Riso (Pork with Rice) Php 155.00

Grilled pork chops basted with our own blend of spicy barbecue sauce

This is what you call MEAL for our dinner.

After eating all this, we still want to make an order something sweet but it feels like our stomach says...

"wait! no space for new food"

apprezzato il nostro pasto!
Sometimes it's really good to give reward on yourself for every hard works you made!
